Firm Foundation

Updated: Aug 11, 2022

Construction worker or missionary? Definitely not construction worker!

Although, the house and the floor plan are actually real even though they are cartooned!

I was asked if I would be able to print out some blueprints for V.B.S. (Vacation Bible School) this year being hosted at the Alliance Church in Prince Albert! And of course I couldn't turn down the opportunity to add to the kids experience! The theme this year for V.B.S. is "a firm foundation" and it was thought that it would be very fitting to have blueprints of a house to really send it home (Home! get it?)!

Everyone, no matter what your ideals, background or beliefs, has a foundation that each person has built their life upon.

Things people place their foundation can be:

  • Their job - this is what you talk about and this is what you work your life away for. You keep striving to work to the top. You spend more time here then with your family or loved ones.

  • Their sexual orientation - in a world where gender is fluid people put their entire self worth within their sexual identity. This is what they talk about and this is what they think about the most often! This is what they build their entire identity around. This dictates where they have fun, who they talk to, where they spend most of their time, and what kind of jobs they have.

  • A hobby - do you take your identity in the things that you do? Are you an extremist and always have to push the boundaries? And if you didn't do this you wouldn't be who you are? Are you an artsy person and that's all people know about you and see so you always have to be artsy and if you aren't then someone thinks that there's something wrong?

What you take your identity in is a great first step in figuring out what your foundation is, what beliefs you hold, what things you hold on to as truth.

But the only firm foundation that we can find is through Jesus Christ! Everything else is a foundation with cracks. Because Jesus Christ is an absolute truth it cannot be shaken, torn down, pulled over or broken! All of the other foundations that we build our houses of Life on have holes and when people poke those holes are entire foundation is shaken!

Using the examples above:

  • Our job - if we lose our job then all of a sudden we have to start back at square one! Even if your job seems to be very secure, you never know if the company will go under or if you make a bad move and lose your job, or if you have to move for some reason and need to find a new job. Are jobs are not secure and not a good place to build our foundation.

  • Sexual orientation - a sexual orientation is based upon a lie. When people start questioning and finding holes in what you believe then this entire foundation comes crashing down. Also, the thoughts of the world make this so fluid, that there is no absolute certainty. How are you supposed to build a foundation on something that you cannot confirm? If you call yourself a lesbian but end up changing to bi-sexual, your foundation has shifted in all of a sudden everything that you've built your identity in has changed. You cannot build your entire life foundation on this.

  • A Hobby - This is something that is part of the house but not the foundation. Of course we have likes and interests and things that make us, us. This does not mean that we can build our entire life on a hobby, like, or interest! You need to have more than that! There needs to be substance behind that person. What happens if you put your entire identity in being a skydiver and then all of sudden you have a bad accident and cannot do it anymore? What happens when you are a crafty person but then you hit a creative block? When these things happen it should not take away from your foundation. You should not be questioning who you are just because you hit a roadblock.

Who we are in Christ is solid. It cannot be shaken. When you put your foundation on an absolute truth there are no cracks. This is where we can find our comfort and freedom! We aren't always worrying about what people think of us or "what if..." because we have confidence in our Lord and Savior When you put your foundation on something that can shift and change there is no certainty and that house of cards can come tumbling down at any moment.

What have you built your foundation on?

1 Corinthians 3:10-15

According to the grace of God which was given to me, as a wise master builder I have laid the foundation, and another builds on it. But let each one take heed how he builds on it. For no other foundation can anyone lay than that which is laid, which is Jesus Christ. Now if anyone builds on this foundation with gold, silver, precious stones, wood, hay, straw, each one's work will become clear; for the Day will declare it, because it will be revealed by fire; and the fire will test each one's work, of what sort it is. If anyone's work which he has built on it endures, he will receive a reward. If anyone's work is burned, he will suffer loss; but he himself will be saved, yet so as through fire.
